TWIN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT LEARNING

A student receiving a diploma from Twin Valley High School will meet or exceed all of the following expectations. These expectations are the building blocks behind the graduation requirements of TVHS and are the school’s contract with parents and students regarding the essential parts of every student’s education. The fifteen basic expectations are summarized on this page.

1.0 The TVHS graduate clearly communicates ideas and information in a variety of circumstances and media. (COMMUNICATION)

2.0 The TVHS graduate solves a variety of simple and complex problems in all fields of knowledge. (PROBLEM SOLVING)

3.0 The TVHS graduate asks critical questions that assess the quality of evidence and data from diverse sources. (REASONING)

4.0 The TVHS graduate sets goals and assesses his/her own learning in order to become an independent learner. (GOAL SETTING)

5.0 The TVHS graduate demonstrates the knowledge to make informed choices that positively affect the health, safety and well-being of himself/herself and others. (HEALTHY CHOICES)

6.0 The TVHS graduate demonstrates the ability to perform essential tasks of daily living. (LIFE SKILLS)

7.0 The TVHS graduate takes an active role in the betterment and goals of the school and the community. (SERVICE)

8.0 The TVHS graduate understands the role of culture and diversity in the community and society. (DIVERSITY)

DETAILED EXPECTATIONS

1.0 COMMUNICATION

The TVHS graduate clearly communicates ideas and information in a variety of circumstances and media.

• Uses verbal and nonverbal skills to express self effectively in writing, discussion, and public speaking

• Listens actively and responds to communications

• Organizes ideas in writing in a coherent manner

• Demonstrates command of appropriate English conventions including grammar, usage and mechanics

• Expresses in writing meaning and key points clearly and succinctly

• Recognizes and addresses the context of and the audience for the writing

• Interprets meaning both stated and implied from a variety of texts

• Makes and supports evaluative comments regarding the quality/validity of written work

• Comprehends main and supporting ideas in written work

• Recognizes and understands the different genres and their purposes

• Selects appropriate technologies and applications to communicate with an audience

2.0 PROBLEM SOLVING

The TVHS graduate solves a variety of simple and complex problems in all fields of knowledge.

3.0 REASONING

The TVHS graduate asks critical questions that assess the quality of evidence and data from diverse sources.

• Uses a variety of processes to assess the quality of data , compare and contrast, form questions and arguments, analyze relationships, and classify information to formulate conclusions

4.0 GOAL SETTING

The TVHS graduate sets goals and assesses own achievement in order to become an independent learner.

• Assesses own achievement by developing rigorous criteria for self, and uses these to set goals and produce consistently high-quality work

• Develops a plan for current and continued education and training to meet personal and career goals

5.0 HEALTHY CHOICES

The TVHS graduate demonstrates the knowledge to make informed choices that positively affect the health, safety and well-being of self and of others.

• Identifies the indicators of intellectual, physical, social and emotional health

• Analyzes how behavior can influence health maintenance

• Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to access appropriate resources to support a healthy lifestyle

• Demonstrates competency in many and proficiency in a few of the skills and concepts needed for a lifetime of physical activity and good personal hygiene

• Demonstrates an understanding of and a proficiency in nutrition, meal planning, and food preparation

6.0 LIFE SKILLS

The TVHS graduate demonstrates the ability to perform essential tasks of daily living

• Demonstrates an understanding of and a proficiency in accessing community resources

7.0 SERVICE

The TVHS graduate takes an active role in the betterment and goals of the school and the community.

8.0 DIVERSITY

The TVHS graduate understands the role of culture and diversity in community and society.

• Understands the concepts of culture, including the cultures of indigenous peoples, at various times in their local community, in Vermont, in the United States, and in various locations world wide

• Demonstrates an understanding of the concepts of diversity, prejudice, and tolerance and its effects on various groups

9.0 NONNATIVE LANGUAGE

The TVHS graduate communicates ideas and information in a nonnative language.

• Speaks and listens in a nonnative language to a level of basic proficiency

• Reads a nonnative language to a level of basic proficiency

• Writes in a nonnative language to a level of basic proficiency

10.0 ART APPRECIATION AND ARTISTIC COMPETENCY

The TVHS graduate demonstrates a basic competency, understanding of and appreciation of a variety of arts. Art forms include but are not limited to music, drama, dance, writing and visual art such as paint, plaster, textiles, wood and metals

• Conveys artistic intent from creator to viewer or listener

• Critiques own and others’ works in progress, both individually and in groups to improve upon intent

• Demonstrates basic knowledge of exemplary works in the arts from a variety of cultures and historical periods

• Uses a minimum of two art forms to communicate

11.0 SOCIAL STUDIES

The TVHS graduate demonstrates an understanding of the history and development of civilization and its relationship with today’s society. • Examines complex webs of causes and effects in relation to past and present events in order to generalize about the workings of human societies and applies their findings to problems

• Utilizes historical evidence to formulate positions, and demonstrates understanding of past and current issues

• Identifies major historical eras and analyzes periods of transition in various times in their local community, in Vermont, in the United States, and in various locations worldwide to understand the past, the present, and the relationship between the two

• Uses geographical knowledge and images of various places to understand the present, communicate historical interpretations, develop solutions for the problems, and plan for the future

• Examines and debates the meaning and importance of participatory citizenship • Compares and evaluates the philosophies and structures, function and purposes of different types of government

• Analyzes the access that various groups and individuals have to civil rights .

• Demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of economics and the impact of their application.

12.0 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The TVHS graduate utilizes appropriate technology for a variety of purposes.

• Identifies capabilities and limitations of contemporary and emerging technology

• Identifies resources and assesses the potential of technology systems and services to address personal, lifelong, and workplace needs

• Applies technology in real world situations

• Uses a wide array of technology to research, gather, and present ideas accurately and appropriately

• Demonstrates an understanding of the legal and ethical behaviors regarding the use of technology

15.0 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES

The TVHS graduate demonstrates an understanding of the concepts, design, and application of the elements of industrial technology.

• Demonstrates basic competency of technical skills within a medium

• Applies knowledge and understanding of technological systems to respond to a variety of needs

• Uses technological/engineering processes to design solutions to problems
