Using this formula will help you to create organized paragraphs. This 6 sentence structure is the building block for more detailed paragraphs as well as the essay format! It is easy to remember and simple to use!

TS + T + I#1 + EX#1 + T + I#2 + EX#2 + CS

TS Topic Sentence This introduces your subject
T Transition This is the first word in your sentence to introduce an idea about your subject; it tells the reader that a new thought is about to be discussed. Some specific ones are: first, for example, for instance, in addition, also, next, another, second, nevertheless, however. These words will be followed by a comma.
I#1 / I#2 Idea #1 or #2 This is the idea about your subject you will discuss. It is short and simply stated.
EX1/EX2 Example #1 or #2 You provide an example to prove your idea. This is where your details belong.
CS Concluding Sentence This is a wrap up of your subject, but it does not sound like the topic sentence.
     

 

Here is a sample paragraph. Each of the paragraph elements is labled.

 

(TS) Scuba diving is an absolute thrill. (T) First, (I#1)it provides me with an opportunity to travel. (EX #1) Since it is too cold to dive often in Vermont, I visit places such as Maui, Cozamel, and the Grand Caymen Islands to dive in warm water. (T) In addition, (I#2) I can experience sea life when I dive. (EX#2) In Maui, I saw eels, schools of fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and even sharks when I took a diving tour. (CS) Scuba diving has opened up a whole new world for me.
