CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE II
This course is designed to enhance student appreciation for literature.
During the course, students will be reading literature from a variety of genres to examine
  • common traits within the genre
  • writing styles of various authors
  • interest, level of literature
  • themes found within the literature
  • character analysis
Once a genre study has been completed, students will be responsible for a project / presentation to demonstrate their newly found knowledge. Some of these projects could include:
  • posters
  • dramatic presentations
  • compare / contrast display
  • character resumes
  • screenplays
Students will read from numerous genres, which could include
  • science fiction
  • mystery
  • biography
  • romance
  • journal writing
  • travel
  • nonfiction

It is important to note that student participation is essential to this course. While daily activities and discussions may focus on a teacher generated topic, the choice of genres, literature, and final projects are determined by the students. The class will brainstorm options, and then students decide on a unit of study with a final project to accompany it.

While the environment of the class is very informal, students need to recognize that 5-7 novels will be read during the course. In addition, students will be responsible for providing their own novels since the reading choice is theirs. There is a portion of class time devoted to reading literature, but students must realize that out of class reading will be required in order to meet deadlines.

Contemporary Literature I is not a prerequiste for this course.

Again, this course is designed to turn students in to lifelong readers.
